Sound of Superman
Rhino/eastwest

Rating: 21%

A strange release, more often than not Sound of Superman features a bevy of covers by unknown bands, rather than the originals we’re all familiar with.

For instance, a band called Nightmare of You cover the Flaming Lips’ deliriously wonderful “Waitin’ For the Superman”. Why not go with the original, which is a pearler? Similarly, Ray Davies’ “(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman” is handled by a group called the Sun. The album itself opens with emo-poppers the Academy Is butchering RE.M.’s “Superman”.

Now while the idea of giving over great originals to be interpreted by a bunch of nobodies is fine, in practice it’s another story. Put simply, these covers don’t resonate in the same way as the originals – what Dave Grohl thinks of Paramore’s take on “My Hero” is anyone’s guess, but you can bet it wouldn’t be complementary.
