So is the message
so simple as to be ‘Make porn, not war’? Peaches’ obsession
with the nether regions continues unabated on Impeach
My Bush, an album that despite its title is
more about immediate pop moments than political
statements.
Where predecessor Fatherfucker was for the
most part uninspired and tired, Impeach My Bush is
immediate and strong from the get-go. At its best
on the guitar-infused rock of “Boys Wanna Be Her”,
merging a disco funk feel given by mixer Mickey Petralia
(Ladytron) and producer Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen)
to something that’s more female empowerment than
genitalia-derived.
The Gossip’s mega-voiced Beth Ditto appears on “Two
Guys (For Every Girl)”, belting up a storm, while “You
Love It” brings Joan Jett (sampled on Fatherfucker’s “I
Don’t Give a…”) on board, and Josh Homme and Peaches
trade lead guitar licks on “Give ‘er”. Elsewhere
the sleek synth-pop of “Downtown” finds her delivering
a sultry and sexy vocal combined with a deadpan Ladytron-like
chorus. It’s the most delicious slice of sexy funk
Peaches has ever come up with.
Clunkers like “Slippery Dick” don’t work anything
like as well, and closer “Stick It to the Pimp” is
similarly a weak moment. Nevertheless, the big difference
between Impeach My Bush and the preceding
Peaches album is that when she sounds inspired here
the songs benefit immeasurably.
