The Red Paintings
Destroy the Robots (EP)
Modern Music/Red Label

Rating: 68%

The Red Paintings have attracted lashings of hype, thanks in no small part to the cover of “Real World” on their last EP Walls. Now the BrisVegas group have released Destroy the Robots, an EP they promise is merely a beginning for the future.

Band leader and visionary Trash McSweeney has an interesting construction style – at times it’s like he’s throwing lashings of paint at the wall and seeing what sticks and what doesn’t. It means that Destroy the Robots is entirely inconsistent, ranging from track to track.

The opening title cut is all super-quick rhythms, while ostensible ‘single’ “Pickles” is quite melodic, then “It Is As It Was” is entirely arena-rock ready and nothing short of large. While some will have trouble with McSweeney’s American accent, there’s no doubting that as a songwriter he’s intriguing, filling his lyrics with religious imagery and interesting time signatures.
