MODELS ABOUT
To celebrate the
release of his debut album Alarm Clock Radiation early
next month, songwriter and multi-nstrumentalist
Brendan Wixted, aka The Model School, will be playing
album launches in Melbourne and Sydney throughout July.
The Model School will also be supporting Melbourne
indie-rockers Pitching Woo at the Tote in Melbourne
on Thursday 29 June, and bluegrass and country-esque
group Nic Dalton and the Gloomchasers at the Hopetoun
Hotel in Sydney on Saturday 22 July.
Alarm Clock Radiation is released on 1
July through Shiny Records. The album was recorded
at Damien Gerard
Studios in Sydney with additional recording and mixing
done at The Model School’s home studio.
Whilst musically akin to indie-rock heroes The Eels,
Sparklehorse and Magnetic Fields, The Model School’s
songs combine insightful lyrics with subtle chord
progressions.
Alarm Clock Radiation is an eclectic
album featuring melodica, sampler, synthesizer, mandolin
and stylophone, along with the usual suspects of
guitar, bass and drums.

HOLLY IN
THE MIDST
Sydney singer/songwriter
Holly Throsby will release her second album Under
The Town on July 15 and will celebrate the
release with a showcase performance at The Vanguard
on July the 4th.
The launch will feature
her five piece band which includes members of Coda,
Blue
Bottle Kiss and Darren Hanlon’s band. Plus a
few surprises will occur on the night.... remember
it is July the 4th and all.
The launch follows
the ‘Making a Fire’ tour, which packed houses in
Sydney, Melbourne
and Brisbane and
concludes in the next week in Adelaide, Perth, Newcastle
and the Blue Mountains. The ‘Making A Fire’ tour
has included special guests such as Pivot, Ned Collette,
Guy Blackman, The Rational Academy and Ambitious
Lovers.
Under The Town is
released on July 15 and like Holly’s first album, was produced
by Tony Dupe. The album was recorded in a tiny house
on Saddleback Mountain in NSW. It’s the same
place in the same house on the same mountain where
her first album was recorded, but this time more
people came up and they brought more instruments
to play along.
This album is different than the last for a few
reasons. Not only are the songs (in part) more up-tempo
and more emotional, the production process also
changed. The sharpness in the songs
is due to a greater length of period in the studio
with Tony and due to the fact that maestro Tim Whitten
(Powderfinger) mixed the record.
Following the album release Holly will head to America
to perform with David Pajo (Slint/Tortoise) for 2
weeks. She will then take to the road again in Australia
in September for a full national tour. Details will
be announced soon. In the meantime this is where
you can catch Holly live.
