DIRTY LUCY
HIT THE WHITE LINES
It’s been
a long time between drinks for Dirty Lucy, after
releasing their debut album Dark Green in 2003
and touring relentlessly to every corner of the
country for two years solid. The girls came off
the road to give the van a rest and retread the
tyres.
In 2006 they are rising from the ashes of day jobs,
vocal nodule operations and bumming around the streets
of St Kilda generally finding themselves, to present
you with a new mini album Music, People, Cities,
Lights and Darkness due in store July 2006.
The first single off the album is “10 Ft Tall”,
a hard rocking tune that highlights the vocal diversity
of lead singer Nicole Brophy. Shedding a whole new
shade of sound onto the previously, folky duo.
Throughout July and
August Dirty Lucy will revisit the white lines
they have
followed over the past
few years once again, hitting the coast of NSW, QLD,
VIC, TAS and SA. They will be joined on this road
trip by the folk-electronica sounds of Sydney’s
Matt Tonks.
Recorded in the wilderness
of Sydney’s South
Coast, and produced by Jodi Moore, Nicole Brophy
and new comer, drummer Syd Green.

THE BELLRAYS
TOUR WITH RADIO BIRDMAN
Sensational Los
Angeles band The BellRays, oft-described as coming
on like a young Aretha Franklin or Tina Turner
fronting the MC5, release their new album Have
A Little Faith in Australia on June,3 and follow
with their first Australian tour – supporting
Radio Birdman! - in late July/early August.
Known for their incendiary
live performances, The BellRays are fronted by
the amazing Lisa Kekaula,
who has also previously toured Australia as a guest
of Basement Jaxx, with whom she won a Grammy for
her performance on the “Good Luck” single).
Have a Little
Faith perfectly captures The BellRays’ singular
sound, which combines two seemingly disparate forms
of American music: the raw power of garage rock and
the emotional drama of soul. Although the Aretha/Tina/MC5
hardly encompasses the BellRays’ artistry,
there is some historical truth behind the hook: the
seamlessness with which the Southern California outfit
combines punk and soul hearkens back to another time
when the two were integrally connected. Detroit was
the capital of both; Iggy, Ike and Tina actually
shared the stage; and the MC5’s aesthetic and
politics drew explicitly from black music and counterculture.
Have a Little
Faith promises to be a significant breakthrough
for the BellRays,
who have garnered
an ever-growing list of accolades. Anticipation for Have
a Little Faith is high: before the album was
completed, its recording and the pursuit of it by
various labels was reported twice in The Los Angeles
Times. The band’s last album, Red, White
and Black, received praise from many critics.
